India Home’s Smart Food Pantry Inauguration 2026

India Home Celebrates Grand Opening of Smart Food Pantry and Smart Bites NYC in Queens

New technology-driven food access initiatives aim to provide older adults and community members with
greater flexibility, convenience, and dignity

Jamaica, NY – September 30, 2026: India Home celebrated the official inauguration of its new Smart
Food Pantry and Smart Bites NYC vending machine on Tuesday, September 29, bringing together elected
officials, community partners, supporters, and community members to mark a new chapter in the
organization’s efforts to address food insecurity across Queens.

Held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Jamaica Market under the theme “Opening Doors to Food Access,”
the inauguration introduced guests to India Home’s new technology-driven approach to expanding access to nutritious food. The Smart Food Pantry and Smart Bites NYC initiative are designed to provide a more flexible and convenient way for older adults and other community members to access food while
promoting independence and dignity.

The celebration welcomed several elected officials and community leaders, including
New York State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, State Senator John Liu, Assemblymember Steven Raga,
Assemblymember David Weprin, and Assemblymember Edward Braunstein. U.S. Senator Kirsten
Gillibrand

graced the celebration through a special video message recognizing the occasion.
Representation from organizations such as Hunter College New York City Food Policy Center, Met
Council and Public Health Solutions also elevated the event.

The presence of elected representatives and community organization partners underscored the importance of collaborative approaches to addressing food insecurity and ensuring that New York City’s diverse communities have access to nutritious and culturally responsive food resources.

India Home Board President Mukund Mehta and Executive Director Dr. Vasundhara Kalasapudi
emphasized the significance of the new initiatives as part of India Home’s continued commitment to
addressing food insecurity in innovative and community-centered ways. They highlighted the
organization’s vision of combining technology with culturally responsive services to expand access to
nutritious food while preserving choice, independence, and dignity for the individuals and families India
Home serves.

At the center of the initiative is India Home’s Smart Food Pantry, powered by Zippin technology. The
system creates an automated shopping experience intended to make accessing groceries simpler and more flexible. The pantry offers nutritious grocery options, including fresh produce, grains and pulses, nuts and spices, refrigerated essentials, and culturally familiar foods reflecting the needs of the communities India Home serves.

The inauguration also celebrated the launch of Smart Bites NYC, a vending machine initiative that
expands the organization’s approach to accessible food distribution. Together, the two initiatives
demonstrate how technology can complement community-based services and create new ways of
reaching individuals who may face scheduling, mobility, or other barriers when accessing traditional food
assistance.

For India Home, the project builds upon nearly two decades of work supporting South Asian and
Indo-Caribbean older adults in New York City. Food and nutrition have long been central to the
organization’s services, alongside programs focused on health and wellness, case management, social
engagement, creative aging, and opportunities for older adults to remain connected to their communities.

The Smart Food Pantry and Smart Bites NYC initiative was made possible with support from GrowNYC,
Met Council, F.Y. Eye, Next50 Foundation, and AstraZeneca, whose partnerships have helped India
Home explore innovative approaches to improving food access.

The September 29 celebration provided guests with an opportunity to experience the new pantry, learn
how its technology works, and hear about India Home’s broader vision for addressing food insecurity.
More than the launch of a new program, the inauguration represented the organization’s continued
commitment to adapting its services as the needs of New York City’s older adults and immigrant
communities evolve.

Through the Smart Food Pantry and Smart Bites NYC, India Home hopes to demonstrate that food
assistance can be accessible, innovative, culturally responsive, and centered on the dignity of the
individuals it serves.
